A native of Quebec City, the French-Canadian bass Jean-Philippe McClish’s voice has been described as ‘beautiful, round, and powerful’ (Ludwig Van), making him an ideal match for the lyric repertoire.
Jean-Philippe earned a master’s degree and an artist diploma in opera performance from McGill University’s Schulich School of Music, where he studied with soprano Dominique Labelle, specializing in Baroque and Classical genres.
Following his studies, Jean-Philippe was selected three times to participate in the Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques program (2018-2021), through which he was invited to sing with the Regensburg Opera. He was also awarded grants from the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation (2019) and the Art Song Foundation award (2019 & 2021).
From 2019 to 2021, Jean-Philippe was selected to be part of the Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier Lyrique Program. There, he sang the Captain in Eugene Onegin, Second Prisoner in Fidelio, Armoured guard in Zauberflöte, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, as well as covering Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor. In 2021, he also participated in the prestigious Verbier Festival Academy performing the roles of Benoit and Alcindoro in La Bohème, as well as singing several recitals.
As a concert soloist, he has performed in Handel’s Messiah, Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle, Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, as well as both the Brahms and the Mozart Requiems.
Most recently, he has been part of the Ensemble at the Theater Orchester Biel Solothurn in Switzerland, where he performed the roles of Orbazzano in Tancredi and The Mother in Seven Deadly Sins. He is currently performing the role of Zuniga in Carmen at the Edmonton Opera in Canada.

I would be remiss if I did not mention a whole series of remarkable highlights, that is, each time the baritone-bass Jean-Philippe Mc Clish opens his mouth to emit the slightest note in his role as the priest Raimondo. What a beautiful warm, round, deep, powerful and impressive voice…In Jean-Philippe, a star is born!

Jean-Philippe McClish, a bass, a splendid voice to watch!
From this beautiful deep voice belonging to Jean-Philippe McClish, a resounding, audible throughout the room, a flight of a warm, sensual light, including a halo of powerful and tender tones at once, with velvety harmonics.

An absolute discovery is Jean-Philippe McClish, who comes fresh from the opera studio. His young bass thunders powerfully through Mark and Bein, here an artist impresses who still has a great career ahead of him.

No less impressive is Jean-Philippe McClish than with wonderfully fresh bass as Orbazzano.

The beautiful singing bass voice of Canadian Jean-Philippe McClish makes us regret that the role of Orbazzano is not more developed.
